Project Outline
  The red 1976 fj40 was a project rig for an individual in Portland, OR. As the bills mounted up he decided it was good time to pull out. When we got her she had a fresh, professionaly rebuilt 383 stroker racing engine & 350 turbohydromatic transmission each have less than 100 miles. (we have invoices from the rebuild). He also had cooling problems we fixed with a custom built radiator & electric fan cooling system built by Mac radiator. We then did our standard complete frame off restoration bringing her back to her prior glory. We estimate she will have in excess of 350 hp, more than enough to climb any mountain but pretty enough to just sit and look at. The following is an outline of our resto process.
Frame
 
  • Stripped down to bare componet, sand blasted & refinished semi-gloss black
Powertrain
 
  • Rebuilt 383 stroker engine (GM 350 w/400 crank, longer connecting rods & bored cylinders)
  • Rebuilt 350 turbohydromatic Trans
  • Overhauled Toyo transfercase replaced all seals & bearings
  • Overhauled frt & rear axels replaced all seals & bearing
  • All components were cleaned and repainted
  • New complete dual exhaust system
Cooling
 
  • New custom made radiator
  • New water pump
  • Replaced all lines & hoses
  • Heater cores flushed & pressure tested
  • Front and rear heater units repaired & refinished working perfectly
Brakes
 
  • Refurbished the factory power brake system
  • New mastercylinder
  • Cleaned and refinished all valves,lines & booster
  • Front disc Brakes & rear drums rebuilt
  • Whole system checked & rechecked
Steering & Suspension
 
  • Added GM saginaw pwr steering system
  • Tie rods replaced
  • All frt end componets replaced or checked,cleaned & refinished
  • New steering dampener
  • All new BDS shocks
  • Springs sand blasted, refinished & bushings replaced
  • Steering correction kit added creating a small lift apx 2 inches
  • Professional frt end alignment
Interior & Electrical
 
  • Reupholstered frt bucket seats & rear jump seats
  • All seat frames sand blasted & refinished
  • All seats proffesionally reupholstered factory color
  • Roll bar sand blasted & refinished with factory pads
  • New headliner
  • New OEM dash pad
  • Floor coated in sound deadening & chip resistant material
  • New sun visors
  • All gauges, warning lamps & controls working perfectly
  • Wiring harness disassembled tested, repaired as needed & rewraped
  • Factory tool kit & spare tire changing kit included
Body & Exterior
 
  • Removed from frame & disassembled
  • Metal dipped to remove rust & paint
  • Any rusted through panels replaced (ie. rear sill)
  • Door skins separated from shells rust removed, rewelded & rustproofed
  • Grille bib disected, sand blasted, rewelded & rust proofed
  • Cowl discected, s/b, rewelded, r/pd'
  • All componets of removeable top disected, s/b, welded, r/pd'
  • Tub disected as nessesary s/b, weld, r/pd'
  • Top rain gutter removed from roof and treated
  • New OEM fenders (still available but getting harder to find)
  • All nuts & bolts sandblasted & coated to prevent corrosion
  • All weather stripping replaced
  • All body bushings replaced
  • New refinished bumpers
  • Brand new OEM n/plates & badges
  • Undercoating applied while a bare tub
  • All new OEM lamps (turn signals,tail lamps ect)
  • Fiberglass top repaired & repainted
  • All paint work done with quality PPG products in our heated down draft booth
  • Colors are based on factory Toyota paint codes (freeborn red)
Wheels & Tires
 
  • OEM wheels powdercoated to original colors
  • OEM hub caps
  • LT31x10.5 8 ply traction tires
